I'm Back...Some Holiday Reflections...The New and Improved Dan...Tri, Tri Again & Again...Werd O' Da Day...

Too much time has passed since my last entry and for that I feel sorry.  I had to take a break, or a step back, as I was finding myself writing only about things that angered me.  I have since, over the last 4 or so months, have found that there are other things in life to put here...

As always, going home for the holidays brought much joy to my heart.  My family is doing well and I am very proud of all of them.  My niece is getting so big.  In that she is only one now, I can only hope she recognizes me the next time I go out there.  For the most part, my friends are all getting older, as am I, and it is quite interesting to recall where we all came from and look forward to where we are all going.  So much has changed, yet so much is the same...

Since the new year, I have been on a kick to better my health.  That is not to say I felt incredibly unhealthy before.  I simply want to be more aware of what I am putting into my body.  I have revisited the Daily Plate on www.livestrong.com and have since lost, and kept off, about 5 pounds.  I can attribute my recently found "fitness" to my daily workouts and my drastic reduction of alcohol consumption.  I have found that I am thinking more clearly and appreciating Saturdays and Sundays more...

I have recently found myself going back to Mass on Sundays.  During my undergraduate years, I spent much time in church and in reflection.  Back then service made me feel like I was giving back to society and bringing me closer to God.  As the years passed, I found myself slipping away and it wasn't long till I was an Easter and Christmas Catholic.  Although I do not prescribe to each and every piece of dogmata, I feel that the messages and teachings help me justify my existence...

Going back to the Church was the first step.  Giving back was the next step.  Last night I took that step by serving those less fortunate at the Parish soup kitchen.  I always knew that there were homeless individuals in my neighborhood, but I never knew that there were so many.  Everyone was so nice and humble.  I couldn't help but wonder how they got to where they were.  Next week, I will make it a point to spend more time socializing with the people we are serving to get a better look into something I know nothing about...

My workouts have been incredibly invigorating.  My daily energy level is through the roof.  And I look forward to my daily routine for both the physical benefits, but equally for the mental benefits (I have roughly 50-60 minutes at minimum to reflect).  This year, the goal is to complete 2 Olympic distance triathlons.  The first, and my only experience, is the Chicago Triathlon on August 29th and the second is the Los Angeles Triathlon on October 3rd.  I am very excited for both and considering my current workout routine, I will be in excellent shape to beat my prior years' times.  I am also in the process of looking for a training group here in Chicago so that I am not training solo.  It would also be nice to meet some active women with common interests...

Werd O' Da Day:

colubrine • \KAHL-yuh-bryne\ • adjective

*1 : of, relating to, or resembling a snake

2 : of or relating to a large cosmopolitan family (Colubridae) of chiefly nonvenomous snakes

Example Sentence:

"By the time the music starts throbbing at 9, there will undoubtedly be a colubrine line slithering down Mass. Ave." (Christopher Muther, The Boston Globe, March 2002)

Did you know?

"Colubrine" may be less common than other animal words, such as "canine," "feline," and "bovine," but it has been around for a good long while. Ultimately derived from the Latin "colubra" ("snake"), it slithered into the English language in the 16th century. ("Cobra," by the way, comes from the same Latin word, but entered English through Portuguese.) Some other words for "snakelike" are "serpentine" (a more common alternative) and "ophidian" (from the Greek word for snake: "ophis").
